Answers to Level Five

This is the last level – congratulations!

1. Answer is (c) the cat that's got the cream.
This expression means very pleased with yourself. You can also say I'm over the moon (but not you look like over the moon). The other two idiomatic expressions are inappropriate in this context.

2. Answer is (a) got chatted up.
This phrasal verb means that the man spoke to her in a friendly, sociable way.

3. Answer is (c) came over to me.
This expression means approached me (not approached to me).

4. Answer is (b) him joining us.
This is the correct structure after I minded. If he joined us would also be possible but not if he joins us.

5. Answer is (d) to cut a long story short.
This is a fixed expression.

6. Answer is (b) turned out,
which means that they eventually found out that he was a film director.

7. Answer is (c) just like me.
Exactly like me would also be correct. The same as me is correct English but not appropriate here.

8. Answer is (c) having me on!.
This expression means you're pulling my leg (not legs) or you're winding me up or you're joking (not you're joking me)

9. Answer is (b) on the spot,
which means immediately. There and then would also be correct but not then and there.

10. Answer is (a) dotted.
This means a line like this: ......... It is a fixed expression in this context.
